Entrepreneurship - The rising role of culture
While extensive research on the interaction between economic factors and formal institutions (laws, policies, etc.) exists, the role of informal institutions (i.e. cultural traits) is less understood. This talk will summarize the importance of informal institutions in shaping entrepreneurial growth and development within a country’s formal institutions and emphasize differences related to gender and entrepreneurship.

Nabamita Dutta is a Professor of Economics at University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. To date, she has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles. Her main research interests hinge at the intersection of new institutional economics and economic development with emphasis on political economy, entrepreneurship, and economics of gender. Her articles have appeared in esteemed journals like the European Journal of Political Economy, Kyklos, Small Business Economics, International Review of Economics and Finance, Industrial Relations: A Journal of Economy and Society, Journal of Institutional Economics, Review of International Economics, Oxford Development Studies, and so on. She has been a visiting research scholar at various institutions in India, Australia, and Germany; and has delivered invited research talks at various prestigious international conferences and workshops. Her research has also been covered by the media, in particular by the BBC, NYMag, and Ideas for India. Based on google scholar, her work has been cited more than 1200 times. Nabamita Dutta is originally from Kolkata, India and moved to this country in 2004 to do her Ph.D. in economics. She graduated from West Virginia University and moved to La Crosse, Wisconsin to start as an Assistant Professor in 2009. She is currently the Associate Editor of Economic Modelling as well as on the Editorial Board for Pakistan Development Review and Economies. 2021 Economic Outlook Address: Dr. Huixin Bi![]() Huixin Bi is a Research and Policy Officer in the Economic Research Department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. Previously, Ms. Bi served as an economist at the Bank of Canada from 2010 to 2015. Her main areas of research are fiscal policy, sovereign debt and computational economics. She holds a B.S. in engineering from Nankai University in China, a M.S. in engineering at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. in economics from Indiana University.
